An 8×8 Display Forms Pixels by Pulling Silicone Into Dimples

A YouTuber known as soiboi soft has created an unusual 8×8 display that produces its pixels without LEDs. Instead, the device uses pneumatics and a sheet of stretchy silicone rubber. The orange panel sits over 64 separate cavities, corresponding to the display’s 64 positions. When a vacuum forms inside one of those cavities, the rubber is pulled inward, creating a visible dimple. Activating different cavities produces the display’s pixel-like patterns through the movement of the silicone. Boing Boing described the resulting effect as both mesmerizing and appealing. The project offers a tactile alternative to electronic displays, using pressure changes and flexible material to make images appear.
