Metal detectorists recover class ring lost in New York lake 28 years ago

A class ring that disappeared into a New York lake 28 years ago has been reunited with the woman who originally owned it, after two metal-detecting hobbyists uncovered it during a search beneath the water. Michael Siegle and Dylan LaPort were looking for items at Great Sacandaga Lake when their detector produced a signal. LaPort told WRGB-TV that the pair turned over a rock and found the Red Creek High School ring sitting underneath it. The ring identified its owner as a member of the Class of 1988. LaPort posted photographs of the find on Facebook, hoping someone would recognize the ring. When the post did not produce leads, the men contacted Red Creek High School. A school secretary was able to identify the owner as Kim Rasbeck, a former classmate. Rasbeck said she had lost the ring during a day at the lake with friends 28 years earlier. The recovery gave her a chance to get back an item she had likely assumed was gone for good. She offered to reimburse the finders for the cost of returning it, but said they declined. According to Rasbeck, the men told her they simply wanted to get the ring back to her. Siegle said returning lost belongings is part of what the pair does while metal detecting. The ring’s recovery was one of the occasions when their hobby led directly to a reunion between an object and its owner.
