On Aug. 31, 1965, NASA’s Super Guppy cargo aircraft took its first test flight, beginning the career of one of the most unusual-looking planes in the space program.
Built by Aero Spacelines from the design of a Boeing B-377 Stratocruiser, the aircraft earned comparisons to a giant flying whale because of its bulbous body. Its appearance served a practical purpose: the Super Guppy was designed to carry enormous cargo, including spacecraft parts and smaller aircraft.
The plane was especially useful during the Apollo program, when rocket stages had to be transported from California to Florida. Its cargo compartment measured 25 feet high, 25 feet wide and 111 feet long. It could carry payloads weighing more than 26 tons.
Loading such large objects required an unusual procedure. The aircraft’s entire nose could hinge open, allowing oversized cargo to be moved directly into the front of the plane.
Over the years, Super Guppys transported a wide range of NASA equipment. Reported examples include T-38 supersonic trainers, a prototype X-38 astronaut “lifeboat,” Orion spacecraft components, Orion heat shields and parts of the Space Launch System rocket. The aircraft also carried a space shuttle trainer crew cabin and other large aerospace hardware.
NASA’s original Super Guppy retired in 1991 and is now displayed at the Pima Air Museum in Tucson, Arizona. A newer model has continued flying for NASA and is based at El Paso International Airport in Texas.
According to Space.com, the active aircraft was damaged during a severe storm before a planned appearance at the EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2026 air show and is undergoing repairs. NASA also planned its own aerospace expo, Max Power, for Nov. 7-8, though it was unclear whether the Super Guppy would be repaired in time to appear.
Despite its strange proportions, the aircraft’s role is straightforward: moving exceptionally large space hardware across the country when more conventional transportation is not sufficient.
