A judge in Los Angeles County has halted criminal proceedings against a 38-year-old man accused of possessing firearms near Donald Trump’s golf club and ordered him to undergo a mental health evaluation.
Jeanine John Taele of Downey was arrested days before Trump was scheduled to attend a Republican fundraiser at Trump National Golf Club in Rancho Palos Verdes on 5 August 2026. According to a US Justice Department account cited by The Guardian, investigators found ammunition on Taele and a loaded firearm in his pickup truck.
The felony charge involves possession of an unregistered short-barreled rifle, an offense carrying a statutory maximum sentence of 10 years. On Wednesday, Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge John Lonergan ruled that Taele was not fit to face the charge. He ordered him held in custody while a separate mental health court conducts an evaluation to determine whether the case can proceed.
The New York Times reported that Taele appeared in court wearing a suicide-prevention gown. His attorney, Anthony Bayne, argued that Taele could not understand or participate in the hearing.
Prosecutors said Taele was first seen at the golf club on 31 July wearing an earpiece and photographing and recording parts of the course. They said he returned two days later, prompting club staff to contact federal security personnel and the Los Angeles County sheriff’s department.
Deputies allegedly found a 16-round magazine containing hollow-point ammunition during a search. Detectives also reported finding a loaded 9mm pistol, binoculars and a badge labeled “security protection agent” in his vehicle.
A search of Taele’s residence allegedly uncovered an illegally modified AR-platform rifle, other firearms, body armor, high-capacity magazines, an earpiece, two radio-signal devices and notebooks containing what authorities described as concerning statements. The Justice Department did not provide details about those statements.
Authorities have not publicly established Taele’s motive. Bill Essayli, then the first assistant US attorney for the Central District of California, said the investigation was still in its early stages and that law enforcement had intervened before Trump’s visit. Taele, a former Marine who served from 2008 to 2016 and was deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan, remains in custody pending the evaluation.
