More than a century ago, audiences in Germany watched a horse appear to solve arithmetic problems by tapping his hoof. Named Clever Hans, the animal became one of the most famous examples in a period when scientists and philosophers seriously debated telepathy, clairvoyance and other so-called psychic phenomena. Hans attracted both curious crowds and researchers, including Carl Stumpf, a major figure in early psychology. The horse’s performances seemed to suggest that animals might possess hidden intellectual or supernatural abilities. Similar claims had been made about other animals, including Rolf, a dog said to answer mathematical questions and spell out messages, and Lady Wonder, an American horse reportedly able to answer questions and make predictions by touching blocks marked with letters and numbers. The investigation into Hans eventually took a more down-to-earth turn. Stumpf’s research assistant, Oskar Pfungst, tested the horse under different conditions. He observed that Hans gave correct answers only when his owner knew the expected answer and was visible to the animal. Pfungst concluded that Hans was detecting involuntary movements or other subtle cues from the owner. The owner did not appear to be deliberately signaling the answers, but the horse was nevertheless responding to information supplied by the person asking the question. This became known as the Clever Hans effect: an experiment can be arranged in a way that allows the researcher’s expectations to influence the subject unintentionally. The discovery removed the need to explain Hans’s behavior through paranormal abilities and became part of a broader shift away from psychical research in universities.
