The testing is taking place at the von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics, where researchers are examining how the heat shield for the European Space Agency’s Draco mission responds to the extreme temperatures associated with atmospheric reentry, according to Space.com. Draco—short for Destructive Reentry Assessment Container Object—will send a satellite into space and back to gather measurements during the destructive phase of reentry. Unlike spacecraft designed to survive the journey home, the Draco satellite is intended to disintegrate in Earth’s atmosphere. The mission’s unusual engineering challenge is that the satellite must be destroyed while a separate data capsule remains intact long enough to preserve and transmit the information it collects. Draco project manager Stijn Lemmens said the design must allow the spacecraft to break up normally while protecting the recorded data inside the capsule. Spacecraft returning through the atmosphere encounter extreme temperatures. Some vehicles are built to withstand those conditions, while others are expected to burn up. The Draco mission is intended to provide direct data on that latter process, helping researchers better understand what happens as satellites are consumed during reentry. The information could also support efforts to manage objects in orbit. With many satellites and other objects now circling Earth, spacecraft operators are working to ensure that missions can safely dispose of their vehicles rather than leave them as space debris. Draco is designed to examine the destruction process so researchers can better predict what occurs when a satellite is sent back into the atmosphere. The flame test at the Belgian institute is part of that preparation, simulating the harsh thermal environment the heat shield will face during the mission’s return to Earth.
