Spanish police have arrested an Albanian man sought by Italy who allegedly escaped from four prisons in Italy and Belgium, including a maximum-security facility in Milan, according to the Policía Nacional and reporting cited by The Guardian.
The suspect was identified by Spanish police only by the initials TT. Italian media have identified him as Toma Taulant, known by the nickname “escape wizard.” He had been serving a sentence scheduled to end in 2048 for offenses including violent robbery, theft and drug dealing, according to reports cited by Agence France-Presse.
Police said the man escaped from prisons in Terni in 2009 and Parma in 2013. He also broke out of a Belgian prison in 2013, allegedly using a human pyramid to get over the wall.
His most recent escape was in December 2025, when police said he cut through bars at a maximum-security prison in Milan and climbed out of a window using knotted sheets. He had been free for about eight months before Spanish officers located him in Tarragona, in northeastern Spain.
The arrest was carried out under a European warrant issued by Italian authorities. Spanish police described the suspect as very dangerous and said he resisted strongly during the operation. They also said several compatriots attempted to prevent the arrest, while one man struck and injured two officers. That alleged assailant remains at large, according to the police statement.
Officers recovered a discarded Sig Sauer pistol reportedly linked to one of the suspect’s associates. They also found fake identity documents and said the man had a criminal record in Girona involving weapons and explosives. Two €500 banknotes in his possession were suspected of being counterfeit and were sent to the Bank of Spain for examination.
The suspect was denied bail and remanded in custody at a Tarragona jail while extradition proceedings to Italy continue. The supplied report does not state whether the allegations against him have been tested in court.
