A newly married couple in Norfolk ended up fully clothed in a river after attempting to pose for wedding photographs in a canoe.
Jamie and Michelle Wade, both 46 and from Horstead, were having pictures taken along the River Bure when they lost their balance and fell into the water. Michelle was still wearing her £1,800 wedding dress, which she had put on about two hours earlier, according to Mirror Weird News.
The couple had hoped to capture a sunset image, but rain and thunderstorms had disrupted the photography session. After deciding to improvise, they cautiously stepped into the canoe. The vessel tipped, sending both of them into the river.
Michelle described the fall as resembling the sinking of the Titanic. She said the resulting photograph was not the elegant newlywed image they had imagined, but reflected a wedding day that had become unexpectedly chaotic and wet.
The river incident was not the only mishap. A guest who ran to check on the couple slipped and broke a leg. Jamie and Michelle then returned to their reception, where 120 guests were reportedly waiting in shock.
Earlier in the day, Michelle had forgotten her bouquet and had to turn back for it. Heavy rain during the confetti throwing caused the pieces to stick to guests, Jamie said. Later, Michelle accidentally placed her foot in a fireworks machine and burned her toe. Jamie spent the evening emptying water from his boots, only to find them filling again.
The wedding took place on August 29 at Norwich Castle Museum, followed by a reception at The King’s Head in Coltishall. The couple’s photo session began on nearby Coltishall Common.
Jamie and Michelle first met at school in 1993, separated as adults and reconnected by chance in a Tesco car park in 2016. They became engaged in 2021 on a boat. Their wedding had originally been planned for 2025 but was postponed after the deaths of Jamie’s father and Michelle’s mother.
Despite the accidents, the couple said they took the events in their stride. They are due to travel to Corfu for their honeymoon this month, although Michelle joked that they might need to bring a paramedic.
